How to Throw the Ultimate Family Picnic
The weather is warm, the sun is shining, and your children want to play. What does that mean? It’s picnic season! Sometimes, it’s easy to get caught up and forget to pack those healthy snacks and the perfect game. Ditch the candy, get out your picnic basket, and let us guide you on how you can throw the ultimate family picnic!
Even with the euphoria of being outdoors in the warmer weather, a picnic has the potential to take a less-than-healthy turn, so we’ve made a list of how to pack for a family picnic with nutrition and fitness in mind. First things first, the essentials: don’t leave your house without your basket of choice, a blanket, and enough water for everyone to stay hydrated. Next, prepare a healthy menu!
Healthy Picnic Eating
Every picnic needs a healthy menu that everyone in your family will enjoy! While the typical picnic menu offers the classic sandwich, we decided to switch things up a bit. For starters, try this creamy avocado hummus. This is not only filled with heart-healthy fat, but the avocado can help you beat those harmful effects of UV rays. Just cut up some bell peppers, and you’re good to go!
After your family enjoys a healthy appetizer, move on to these colorful quinoa and vegetable spring rolls! These light and fresh rolls will be perfect for those sunshine-filled picnic play days.
A picnic isn’t complete without your favorite fruits. Get your children excited about eating fruit with these fun rainbow fruit kabobs! Use any fruits you prefer, but we like arranging them to make a pretty rainbow. Whatever fruits you decide to include, these kabobs are refreshing and delicious.
Play in the Park
No picnic is complete without games to follow the food. We decided to give a little twist to the tried and true picnic activities to maximize the fun with three of our favorite games:
- Frisbee Rounders: Instead of going the classic route with a bat and ball, play Rounders with a Frisbee instead! Here’s how to play: The “batter” throws the Frisbee as far as they can before running around the bases, while the rest of the family aims to retrieve it and get the player out before they can make a home run.
- Blanket Volleyball: Get double the use out of your picnic blankets by using them in a family game. Create two teams and use two blankets to launch a ball from one team to the other, just like volleyball. Score!
- On Target: Safety is key, so try this darts alternative that packs all the fun and none of the danger. Here’s how to play: It’s as simple as throwing sand-filled bags into rings! This game is kind of like horseshoes, but safer.
A fresh and healthy menu paired with family-fun picnic games is sure to have your family ready to create a picnic tradition! What are your favorite healthy menu items or games to bring to a family picnic? Share with us in the comments below!
